Standards and Ratings Program
| The
Standards and Ratings Program is designed to give members a structured
study guide and to set standards by which they can measure their
progress as weavers and as craftsmen. The Guild awards Certificates
on three levels: Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master. |
Application Process
Each year, applications for participation in the program are accepted
by the Ratings Chairman from September until the November Guild Meeting.
The booklet containing the requirements
for the rating, instructions for submission of work, definitions of
terms, a guild mentor list, and weaving reference list can be found here.
Evaluation Process
The deadline for submitting the completed portfolio is the May Guild
Meeting so that the judging can take place during the summer. Certificates
are awarded and portfolios displayed at the September meeting following
submission of the work.

Apprentice
Weaver Certificate Requirements
The Apprentice Weaver Rating is a 4-shaft exercise requiring four articles woven
in different fibers.
|
- A
sampler of twill threadings with balanced tie-up and trompt
as writ (as drawn in) treadling
- A
color blanket (gamp) in the weave of your choice
- A
sample or article in balanced plain weave using color and/or
texture
(log cabin, thick and thin, color and weave, etc.)
- An
article of your choice in weave other than those mentioned
in the above items
|
| The
weaver is expected to demonstrate the ability to choose appropriate
fibers, estimate the amount of yarn required for a project and
to create a drawdown/up. Working with a guild mentor is encouraged. |
Journeyman Weaver Certificate Requirements
The Journeyman Weaver Rating is designed to help the weaver correlate what can
be learned from all sources: teachers, books, experiments, etc. Computer-aided
drafting and weaving may be used at this level. Multiple shafts may be used
but are not required. The candidate's portfolio must include:
|
- Demonstration of Monochromatic, Analogous, Complementary, Split
Complementary, and Triad color harmonies with color wrappings

the above listed weaves not used in the previous section or
a weave of your own design, documented fully
- Five samples from one warp showing the effect of warp sett

|
The weaver is expected to submit a

to show even edges, even beating, and pleasing effect.
Specific instructions for the Journeyman Level requirements
appear in the Application Booklet. |
Master Weaver Certificate Requirements
